Dr. Mahesh Bhargava (15th Feb, 1947 - 30th August, 2023) was the visionary Promoter and Founder of the National Psychological Corporation (NPC), established in 1971 with the aim of advancing psychological and educational assessment in India. Dr Mahesh Bhargava (15 February 1947 – 30 August 2023) was a distinguished scholar in the fields of Behavioural and Educational Sciences in India. Widely respected as a psychologist, educationist, poet, and author, he devoted his life to advancing psychological research, educational development, and human welfare. He held leadership roles in nearly 50 professional organisations, including President of the Indian Psychometrics & Educational Research Association (IPERA), Patna, President of the Praachi Psycho-Cultural Research Association, Meerut, Vice- President of the World Science Congress, Kolkata, and Sectional President of the Indian Science Congress in 2005. He also served in several academic and socio- cultural bodies and was appointed to the Hindi Salahakar Samiti of the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
Throughout his academic career, Dr Bhargava supervised the publication of nearly 15 journals, contributed to 36 scholarly volumes, authored 54 books, and prepared a total of 90 academic publications used by students, researchers, and professionals. He developed around 15 educational transparencies and CDs to simplify complex subjects and created nearly 16 psychological tools that became valuable resources in behavioural and social science research. His scholarly contribution also included approximately 275 research papers, participation in nearly 200 conferences and seminars, and the organisation of more than 140 academic programmes across India.
To promote research and guidance services in behavioural sciences, Dr Bhargava established the Harprasad Institute of Behavioural Studies (HIBS) and Samadhan Kendra, extending psychological services to educational institutions, hospitals, corporate organisations, sports institutions, and defence services. In 1971, he founded the National Psychological Corporation, which has since developed and published more than 1,300 psychological tests, providing cost-effective and culturally relevant Indian alternatives to imported assessments under the vision of “Make in India.”
During his lifetime, Dr Bhargava received nearly 85 honours, awards, and recognitions from respected institutions across the country. Known for his humanity, integrity, honesty, and dignity, he guided and inspired countless students, researchers, and professionals. His legacy continues to influence the fields of psychology, education, and human development in India.
